โLet justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.โ Amos 5:24
The book of Amos is a prophetic call to justice and righteousness. Amos, a shepherd and farmer from Tekoa, was sent by God to deliver a powerful message to Israel. Though Israel was prosperous, its society was filled with corruption, oppression and religious hypocrisy. Amos prophesied to a people who were faithful in rituals but unfaithful in their daily lives. God rejected Israelโs religious ceremonies because they were not accompanied by true obedience and justice.
True worship is so much more than just going to church, singing songs and fulfilling our church responsibilities. The imagery of water highlighted in Amos 5:24 suggests something continuous, unstoppable, and life-giving. Justice means treating people fairly, defending the weak and having mercy and care for the oppressed. Justice should flow naturally from Godโs people.
As followers of Christ, we are called to stand for justice, whether in our communities, workplaces, or homes. We must show love, care and mercy to the oppressed and towards one another.
Amosโ message is a wake-up call. God desires far more than church attendance. He calls us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8). I pray that we will commit to justice in our daily lives, to reflect Godโs love and truth in all we do.
Lord God, I pray that our eyes will be open to injustice; may your justice, love, care and mercy roll like a river through our lives, give us the courage to act, to practically impact peopleโs lives with your love and mercy, in Jesus's Name. Amen.
