“You go first”
We’ve all heard or said the expression ‘You go first’. Whether it’s letting someone go in front of you when you’re in a queue or before you enter through a door in a crowded space. It’s good and right when we do it in those situations. But there are instances when that is not the right thing to do, even though it’s the first thing we’re tempted to do.
When we see a need, or when we can initiate a conversation, encourage someone or compliment them, the right attitude is not ‘you go first’. Understandably, our fears around what others might perceive, or even our ability to engage in those acts, all tempt us to have a ‘you go first’ attitude. But what is interesting is that when someone initiates a conversation with us, we appreciate that and we feel included and even loved. When someone encourages us or compliments us, we value that. But for that to happen, someone didn’t give in to the ‘you go first’ attitude, but stepped up and took initiative.
This week, I read about Walmart’s “10 Foot Rule.” It states, “From this day forward, I solemnly promise and declare that every time a customer comes within ten feet of me, I will smile, look him in the eye, and greet him.”
Jesus said in Matthew 22:39 “…love your neighbour as yourself.” One of the best ways to love someone is to reject the ‘you go first’ attitude.
Next time you see someone close to you, think about what you can say or do to bless them. Maybe you can only smile or greet them—maybe more. Whatever it is, commit to blessing those in your proximity. They will be glad you didn’t think, ‘You go first.’
